Why are my Contacts missing after iOS 18.6 update

After updating my iPhone 16 to iOS 18.6 last night, I woke up this morning and most of my contacts were gone. Only a handful are showing, maybe 5 or 10 out of what used to be hundreds. If I start typing someone’s name in Messages, their info shows up, but once I send the text it just turns back into a phone number.

I didn’t change any settings and everything should have been syncing with iCloud. Did this happen to anyone else after the update? And is there any way to get the missing contacts back without wiping my phone?

Really appreciate any advice.

  1. Same issue here. I had over 700 contacts before the update and now I’m down to around 450. Checked iCloud.com too and it’s missing there as well, so this isn’t just a phone display issue. Do we think Apple will push a quick patch for this, or are we stuck until the next update?

  2. Question for you timothy.kane91, were your contacts saved only in iCloud? On my phone the Gmail contacts stayed fine but the iCloud ones disappeared. If you had more than one account set up, maybe check under Settings > Contacts > Accounts. Could be that only iCloud sync is broken after this update.

  3. Spent 2 hours chatting with Apple support today. They couldn’t fix it and told me the only option is restoring from an older backup, which I don’t have. Honestly, who makes a fresh backup every time there’s an update? This feels like a straight-up bug, not user error.
