Installed iOS 18.6.2 a few days back and since then my phone camera has been pretty much unusable. Both front and back cameras randomly stop working, or they show the image but as soon as I press capture the whole thing just hangs.
Tried restarting, updating apps, even removed my case thinking it might be heat, but no luck. The weird thing is it happens in social apps too (Snap, IG).
Is there any fix for this or do we just have to wait for Apple to push another update?
After the iOS 18.6.2 update, several users have reported that their cameras stopped working reliably. Common symptoms include the app freezing after pressing capture, the screen going black, or the camera crashing inside social apps like Instagram, Snapchat, and WhatsApp. In some cases, Face ID also stopped working when the front camera glitched.
From what’s been shared in the community, these steps have provided some relief according to the users:
Force restart: Press volume up once, volume down once, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
Switching modes: Moving between Photo, Portrait, and Panorama modes temporarily reset the lens for a few users.
Reset/restore: Backing up, erasing the device, testing the camera clean, then restoring data fixed the issue for at least one person.
Resetting all settings or doing a hard reset helped others, though sometimes only temporarily.
There isn’t a guaranteed solution yet since everyone is facing this issue differently, and the issue appears tied to the update itself. Some of these steps may help reduce the crashes, but many users are still waiting for Apple to address it in a future patch.

Same issue here. Since updating, my camera app not working properly… sometimes shutter clicks but photo doesn’t save. Even happens in social apps like Instagram and WhatsApp, so it’s not just the iPhone camera app.
Have you tried doing a force restart yet? It’s not the same as a normal restart and sometimes clears weird bugs after an iOS update. Quick press volume up → quick press volume down → then hold the side button until you see the Apple logo (can take ~15 seconds, don’t let go early). I usually do this after every major update.
Honestly this was a pain but it worked backed up, erased the 14 Plus, set it up clean, tested the camera (had to toggle between photo and portrait till it focused right), then erased again and restored my stuff. After all that, the camera’s finally normal.
Exact same problem. After updating, camera glitching like crazy iPhone back camera freezes, front camera black screen. Definitely something wrong with iOS 18.6.2.

My 13 Pro Max started acting crazy right after 18.6.2. First the camera would just hang, then sometimes the preview turned into these rainbow-looking lines. I tried the reset thing, it worked for maybe a few hours, then the whole problem came back. The weirdest part? My phone suddenly threw a warning about “unknown camera components” even though it’s straight from Apple and has never been repaired.
Honestly thought I’d have to book a repair. My 14 Pro’s camera was useless until I noticed a strange click when I went into Panorama mode. Swapped between a few modes while holding the phone and it rattled, then all of a sudden the lens settled and started focusing again. Still a little soft, but way better than the complete blur I had before.
Yep, 14 Plus here too. First the rear cam quit, then after restarting the front cam wouldn’t load and now Face ID’s useless.
Same here on my iPhone 12. Right after moving to 18.6.2 the camera just stopped working properly sometimes the app opens but won’t capture, other times it’s just a black screen. Tried a normal restart, no change.
Same here on my iPhone 13. Updated to 18.6.2 a couple days ago and now the camera glitches just like everyone else is describing. Really hoping Apple pushes a fix soon.
After installing iOS 18.6.2 my iPhone camera freezing non stop. Back cam opens then just locks up, and the front camera won’t turn on at all. I didn’t have this before the update.
My 12 has the exact same problem after the 18.6.2 update. Camera app opens but won’t actually capture, sometimes just a black screen. It was totally fine before updating.
Same issue on my iPhone 15. After 18.6.2, both front and back cameras crash in apps like IG and Snapchat. Works sometimes in the stock Camera app, then just freezes again. Really frustrating.
My 16 Pro Max is doing the same thing since updating camera shows the preview fine, but the second I hit capture the whole app hangs. Tried restarts, no change. Hoping Apple releases a patch fast.
